Ballistic Lightning

'Ballistic Lightning'

The English Electric, later BAC, Lightning had one of the most impressive climb rates of any aircraft. Its two Rolls Royce engines could propel it to an altitude of 36,000ft (11,000m) in under three minutes. It had a top speed of Mach 2 at an altitude of 36,000ft and could intercept aircraft at altitudes up to 65,000ft. This cartoon illustrates this impressive performance.

This cartoon was exhibited, and sold, at the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition held at the Mall Galleries, London, in July 2009.
